Olympia Center, (222 Columbia St. NW, Olympia, WA 98501)
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
1.5 CLEs pending approval by WSBA
Congress created SIJS in 1990 to grant immigration relief to children and youth who have been abandoned, abused or neglected by their parents. This CLE will train attorneys to understand the eligibility requirements, which include a state court finding that the minor cannot be reunified with one or both parents due to abuse, abandonment, neglect or a similar basis under state law, and a finding that it is not in the child’s best interest to be returned to their home country. The attending attorneys will learn about how to assist vulnerable children and youth with the state court component of attaining this immigration status. Anna Rae Goethe from the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project will teach the class and will discuss her work representing children and families in removal proceedings and works to obtain immigration relief for her clients through Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and asylum.
The evening will start with a light meal at 5:00 and the CLE itself will be between 5:30 and 7:00 pm. Location: Olympia Center, Room 101/102.
